Talking about the origins of the name "Sorrento", the most famous legend says that the city is named after the mythical sirens, half woman half fish, who made the sailors shipwreck on the rocky coasts.

Probably of greek origins, it was under the romsn power until 89 bC; after that it went under the bizantine dominium and from the IX century, being an independent ducato, it started fighting with the cities Amalfi and Salerno, that are nearby.

Home of famous people like Torquato Tasso, after whom the mai square is named, it also gave birth to silvio Salvatore Gargiulo, known as saltovar, writer of various poems dedicated to Sorrento, Aniello Califano, author of songs now spread all avoer the world, and it also hosted the famous poet henric ibsen.
